WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life urges Senate Democrat to release their hold on the Senate bill 178, the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act. All but four Senate Democrats oppose the bi-partisan bill to help victims of human trafficking because of language to prohibit the use of funds for abortion. The language to prevent abortion funding is consistent with the Hyde language that allows abortion funding for rape, incest and life of the mother.

History tells us that when language to exclude abortion is not included, the strong arm of the abortion industry flexes its muscle and acquires a big piece of the pie ,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of DFLA.. “The Victims Fund should be used to help the victim, not line the pockets of the abortion industry.”

Human Trafficking is a multimillion  dollar industry. Over 2.4 million people suffer at the hands of predators who sell innocent people for slavery. Eighty percent of the trafficking victims are sold into sexual slavery. The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, would have created a fund to support the victims from fees assessed to the predators involved with human trafficking.  Four Democrats, Senators Casey, Donnelly, Heitcamp, and Manchin supported the bill.

“That this critically important legislation has been compromised is testament to the narrow, self-interest politics of the abortion industry,” said Day. “Four Senate Democrats have sense enough to see beyond the facade and represent true democratic values to support victims.  We strongly encourage Senate Democrats to take a second look at this reasonable language and support the legislation so the funds can be used to help victims.”

Democrats For Life of America was founded in 1999 to mobilize Democrats at the local, state, and national levels. DFLA’s primary mission has been to elect pro-life Democrats, support pro-life elected officials, promote a pro-life plank in the Democratic Party platform, and achieve legislation that fosters respect for human life.

Democrats for Life of America is one of over 200 member organizations of Consistent Life, an international network for peace, justice, and life.

Kristen Day - Speech at March for Life

Posted in Press Releases

I am so pleased to be here today, joining my whole-life friends at the March for Life. I would also like to express my appreciation to Aimee for all her hard work in pulling this diverse coalition together.

There is a song by folk singer Todd Snider that starts off (and sing along if you know it): “Conservative Christian, right-wing Republican, straight, white, American male.” Do you think he was describing the pro-life movement in that song? The national dialogue would have you think so, and from the speakers on the main stage a few blocks away, you may also get the impression that the pro-life movement is made up of conservative Christian, right-wing Republican, straight, white, American males.

However, the movement, our movement, is much more diverse than that. As you can see from the speakers here today and the organizations we represent, we are Republican, Democrat, non-partisan, Christian, atheists, Jewish, right wing, left wing, no wing, straight, gay, white, black, (I was trying to figure what color hair Amiee would have today – teal) purple, pink male, and female. We don’t fit those lyrics in Todd Snider’s song nor the national and accepted description of our movement.

We are all here today to not only celebrate and promote the sanctity of life at all stages, but also to unite under the umbrella of the Pro-Life Allies coalition. We celebrate diversity and know that unity and working together toward a common goal builds success. Fighting for political power and exploiting differences as weakness results in chaos and disaster. Just look at the U.S. Congress to see how that works.

As Pro-life Allies, we many not all support a minimum wage increase, national health care, or the keystone pipeline. We may not all support free college tuition. We may have different opinions on how to solve the immigration issue. We are diverse.

There might even be, as Todd Snider sings in that same song, “Tree huggin’, love makin’, pot smokin’, gay weddin’, widespread diggin’ hippies” in the pro-life movement. Who we are, what we look like, and our political persuasion shouldn’t matter.

We have a common goal to promote and protect life at every stage, and when we can get past all that other stuff, we will succeed. I am proud to join the Pro-Life Allies and so impressed by the dedication and exceptional ability of Aimee to bring us all together.

Thank you.

“As a pro-life advocate, I am proud to stand here to support Peggy Young. In our movement, we are often accused of caring only for the unborn child and ignoring the needs of the women. The fact that I am joined by 22 other pro-life groups is a testament to our commitment to the value of life and of raising children. Denying benefits and not providing reasonable accommodations for a pregnant woman is not pro-life.

The Court of Appeals was in error with its interpretation of the PDA. If the Supreme Court upholds that position, it could put a woman in the unjustifiable position of choosing between the welfare of her unborn child and her economic security. This is wrong.

The earlier interpretation by the courts seriously weakens the effect of the PDA and could change the law and put women in situations where they are pressured to abort. That is not pro-life. Pregnancy is an important feature of human life. The right to bear children and have families is fundamental. Consequently, a woman’s distinctive situation in that vital aspect of life should be respected and supported by her employer.

We are hopeful that the Supreme Court will correctly interpret the text of law as it reflects the purpose of Congress in enacting it.”

Veto of Bill to Ban Late-Term Abortion Bill Hurts Democrats

WASHINGTON, DC – As predicted by Democrats for Life of America, West Virginia Republicans claimed both the state Senate and the House of Delegates for the first time decades as a result of a Republican “guilt by association” campaign that blamed the Democratic Party for  the failure of the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act.

Democrats For Life cautioned Governor Earl Ray Tomblin on May 16, 2014, that his veto of the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act (HB 4588) would deliver the legislature to Republicans and requested an upcoming special session that included the bill for reconsideration.

“When Governor Earl Ray Tomblin vetoed the pro-life bill, he chose to ignore the legislative process and played a part in a disastrous national democratic strategy to promote abortion,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats for Life.

Governor Tomblin vetoed the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act (HB 4588) after the session had ended denying the legislature the opportunity to override his veto.At the time of his veto, democrats controlled both the House of Delegates and the Senate. The legislation was proposed and supported by Democrats. Not a single Republican cosponsored the House bill. Nineteen of the twenty-nine votes in the Senate were Democratic. A majority of Delegates supported the bill.

Democratic Loss Highlights Need for Pro-Life Leadership in Democratic Party

WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America is urging the Democratic National Committee, once again, to relax its pro-abortion position and open its doors to welcome and support pro-life Democrats. In addition to election results, Democrats For Life of America points to polls that consistently show that Democratic Party insiders are out of touch with the rank-and-file Democratic voter across America.

“The National Democrat message to support abortion destroys Democratic candidates in pro-life states and districts by pushing pro-life democrats out of the party,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats for Life. “A large majority of Democrats support reasonable restrictions on abortion. We are alienating a whole new generation of pro-life Democrats.”
