DFLA SUPPORTS PROHIBTION ON FUNDING ORGANIZATIONS THAT PERFORM ABORTION
In a late night vote last Thursday, the House of Representatives approved an Amendment, by a vote of 240 to 185, which would prohibit federal funding to any organization that funds abortion. This language is consistent with intent of settled policy-the Hyde Amendment that blocks federal funding of abortions. Democrats For Life of America (DFLA) endorses this legislative action.
DFLA is pleased to note that ten Democrats voted in support: Dan Boren (D-OK), Jerry Costello (D-IL), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Collin Peterson (D-MN), Nick Rahall (D-WV), Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Mike Ross (D-AR) and Heath Shuler (D-NC).
Current law prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion, but allows organizations to use separate fund to pay for abortion. As a result, Planned Parenthood, which receives $300 to $400 million in federal funding each year, is also the nation's leading abortion provider. A majority of Americans oppose federal funding of abortions. Under the Pence Amendment, Planned Parenthood would be prohibited from receiving federal dollars.
Planned Parenthood has no need of largesse from federal tax coffers. Even its local affiliates are afloat with funds. Washington DC's affiliate, for example, had total revenue in 2008 of $7.7 million with $2.2 million cash on hand at the end of the year. Planned Parenthood of Mar Monte, one of Planned Parenthood's 34 affiliates in California, had $69 million in net assets at the end of 2008. Another affiliate in California, Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, had $43 million in net assets and the end of 2008.
Democrats For Life of America supports the Pence Amendment. In contrast to the GOP House plans, however, any federal monies realized by this legislation should be redirected to prolife concerns. Enlarge the Pregnancy Assistance Fund-enacted as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act-or offset catastrophic cuts proposed by the House GOP to the Department of Agriculture's Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) funding.
Should the Senate support the Pence Amendment and prevent organizations who perform abortions (such as Planned Parenthood) from receiving Federal funds?
97 Percent of Respondents said "Yes".
