“We’re losing Middle America, and it’s all going red,” said Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America.

Since 2008, the party has suffered devastating losses across the board, Ms. Day said. According to the Democratic Victory Strategy report, the party has lost 69 House seats, 13 Senate seats, 910 state legislative seats, 30 state legislative chambers, and 11 governorships.
While the party has been able to win the White House by winning a few big states that have had enough electoral votes, these are hollow victories that leave the rest of the party in trouble, Ms. Day said.  Pro-life voters being stranded by the party are a big reason for these losses, she said.
“Pro-lifer Democrats hold their noses and vote Republican,” she said.
Day and other concerned liberals and Democrats are getting together in Washington, D.C. for the Democratic Revival, a gathering to share ideas on how to move the party forward by embracing pro-life members and values.
“We’re opening up the big tent,” she said.
Day wants to see the party get back to a 50-state strategy that finds the best candidates for a particular region.  That means encouraging and supporting pro-life Democrats, and making a place for them in the party.
Winning back pro-lifers does not have to mean the start of another culture war, she said, as the Democratic Party is uniquely positioned to appeal to pro-lifers on a broad range of issues, from abortion to the environment, to healthcare, to strengthening the social safety net for all Americans.
"We are also looking toward the future of the party, as more and more Millennials are identifying as pro-life", Day said.
The Democratic Revival starts on Monday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20045.
A reception follows from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hall of States Building, 444 North Capitol St. NW, Washington, D.C. To register, or for more information, please go

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Senate is set to vote today (Tuesday) on cloture for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, banning abortion after 20-week. Democrats For Life of America is urging a vote to support women and their families in all stages of life.

“We urge all Democrats to support cloture on the 20-week ban protect pre-born children and to allow an important discussion on providing additional support for pregnant women,” said Kristen Day, DFLA’s executive director.

The ban restricts abortions after 20 weeks, while allowing for exceptions for victims of rape or incest, or where the life of the mother is at stake. Day said this measure, if adopted, will effectively end abortion at around the same time doctors consider most infants viable outside the womb.

“A 20-week ban is reasonable. By medical definition, the bill actually prohibits abortion after 22 weeks, which is even closer to the accepted measure of fetal viability, 24 weeks,” she said.  “Today, certain hospitals are doing everything they can to save 22-week-old pre-born infants. At the same time, abortion clinics are taking the lives of clearly viable pre-born infants.”

Stopping abortion isn’t enough, though, and DFLA stands with other pro-life Democrats in calling for real help for women. Sen. Robert Casey, Jr., D-Pennsylvania, introduced an important amendment to the ban that would increase funding for the Pregnancy Assistance Fund. Casey’s amendment would provide an additional $350 million in support for this program in the coming years.

“As a pro-life Democrat, I believe the role of government is to protect, enrich and value all life for every person at every moment from beginning to end,” he said.

Casey’s amendment would fund a program that devotes resources to support pregnant and parenting teens and young women. It’s a step in the right direction, according to Day, but more can and should be done.

“Senator Casey’s Amendment is a great start, but we should also discuss paid medical leave and other supportive measures to help women choose life instead of abortion,” she said.

DFLA is strongly behind expanded family leave, allowing women real choices when it comes to the most important issues in their lives. Democrats For Life of America joins Casey in calling for greater help for women and their families.

“Life extends beyond the womb, and we owe pregnant women and their children the support they need to live full, productive lives,” Casey said.

WASHINGTON, DC — With Congressional Republicans starting to hold Planned Parenthood accountable for the deplorable practice of selling body parts from butchered babies, Democrats For Life of America wants to see real solutions to end abortion.
Today’s start of the House Judiciary Committee hearing titled “Examining the Horrific Abortion Practices at the Nation's Largest Abortion Provider” puts Planned Parenthood in the spotlight for its deceptive and horrific practice of selling the body parts of aborted babies. Planned Parenthood turned their corpses into “revenue” while cloaking their actions in the language of choice. Even as the hearings start, Planned Parenthood tries to deflect.
Planned Parenthood Vice President Dawn Laguens told USA Today, "From the provocative title to the slate of life-long anti-abortion activists invited to testify, it’s clear this hearing was not about Planned Parenthood --- it was a chance for anti-abortion extremists and members of Congress to promote their political agenda of banning abortion in this country."
Only an abortion extremist would demand that the taxpayers give money to Planned Parenthood, which is a $1.2 billion business, making money off of women and their aborted babies.
“Cutting their funding will not hurt women’s health because there are many alternative comprehensive health care clinics,” said Kristen Day, executive director for DFLA.
There are more than 13,000 health care clinics that provide comprehensive health care for women and families—vastly surpassing Planned Parenthood’s 650 clinics. In each of 31 states, there are ten or fewer Planned Parenthood clinics. Planned Parenthood doesn’t even provide anything close to comprehensive care for women. Planned Parenthood serves between 1 percent and 2 percent of American women, mostly offering STD tests and contraception.
“Fewer women are going to Planned Parenthood because more women have health insurance and choose alternatives that provide full health care services,” Day said.
Planned Parenthood has been caught on video engaging in the sale of human body parts. Planned Parenthood does not provide real health care to women. Why are they getting any money from the taxpayers?
It’s time to stop funding Planned Parenthood and start giving women real healthcare. Put the money Planned Parenthood was going to get, and give it to the Community Health Centers that offer women real care, and real choices.

Democrats For Life Urges Pro-Life Democratic Senator Bob Casey to Withdraw Support for Planned Parenthood Abortion Business

Support funding, instead, of organizations that provide comprehensive health care for women.

WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America is urging Senator Bob Casey, Jr. of Pennsylvania to reconsider his support for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. The profitable $1.2 billion-per-year organization performed more than 300,000 abortions last year. It is currently under investigation for selling body parts, including hearts, lungs and livers, of children whom they have aborted.

“As supporters of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), we share Senator Casey’s commitment to provide access to comprehensive health care, including access to family planning,” said Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America. “But the suggestion that Planned Parenthood is the number-one one health care provider for women is a gross misrepresentation.”

There are approximately 158 million women in the U.S.  While Planned Parenthood claims to be the leading health care provider for women, it does not provide comprehensive health care services for women, nor is it the leading provider. Planned Parenthood serves between 1 percent and 2 percentof American women. The primary services offered by Planned Parenthood are STD tests and contraception, which together constitute 76 percent of services. Prenatal support is listed as less than 1 percent. (Source: Planned Parenthood’s 2014 Annual Report.) Women’s health care is complex and goes well beyond access to contraception, STD tests, or abortion. The top health concerns for women include heart disease, diabetes, and cancer—none of which Planned Parenthood addresses in its activities.

“Senator Casey has been a leading advocate for pregnant women and new mothers. We were proud to work with him to pass the Pregnancy Assistance Fund because more support to carry a child to term is a key component to lowering the abortion rate,” said Day. “However, aligning with Planned Parenthood is akin to supporting abortion, given the organization’s increasing market share in the abortion industry. There are a multitude of non-violent health care alternatives that opponents of abortion and supporters of Title X funds can and should support.”

There are more than 13,000 health care clinics that provide comprehensive health care for women and families—vastly surpassing Planned Parenthood’s 650 clinics. In each of 31 states, there are ten or fewer Planned Parenthood clinics. There are more Community Health Centers (CHCs) in California alone than the total number of Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide. The ACA, supported by Senator Casey and DFLA, provided funding to expand the number of CHCs. Since 2010, more than 700 new facilities have been built to provide comprehensive services to women and families. The CHCs provide more complete health services than Planned Parenthood, including mammograms and prenatal care. They also provide contraception. CHCs serve more than 23 million individuals and families, regardless of ability to pay. Women in rural areas, in particular, are more likely to have access to a Community Health Center, given that the centers target communities in need. Planned Parenthood facilities tend to be located in or near high-populated cities, such as Los Angeles and Chicago.

Senator Casey, like most Americans, has been given inaccurate information about the scope of health care services provided by Planned Parenthood,” said Day. “We now know the truth. It’s time to look out for the best interests of women and their children by ensuring that federal funding is allocated to organizations that provide comprehensive health care for women.”

Eight videos have been released showing Planned Parenthood doctors discussing selling or “donating for a fee” human body parts from aborted fetuses. In one video, a Planned Parenthood doctor discusses changing the kind of abortion procedure the organization performs so as to “preserve the specimen” or prevent crushing the organs, such as the liver or heart. The most recent video includes testimony about harvesting organs from a living fetus. Although Planned Parenthood denies selling body parts for profit, the questions and doubts about the legality and medical ethics surrounding this practice are continuing to escalate. The very fact that organs can be harvested belies the myth that abortions are performed on “blobs of tissue.”

“The Planned Parenthood videos clearly portray the humanity of the unborn and have served as a wake-up call to Americans, rallying them to take to the streets in huge numbers to speak out,” said Day. “Even the abortion doctor who exclaims, ‘It’s another boy’ recognizes that humanity. Pro-life Democratic Senator Casey should be on the forefront of this battle, neither defending nor advocating for the nation’s largest abortion business. Democrats don’t defend corporate welfare, particularly when that corporation is harming our most vulnerable children.”

Democrats Urge Support for Potential Displaced Planned Parenthood Patients

WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America encourages supportive outreach to patients who believe that they may lose access to health care services if Planned Parenthood closes its doors. Since the Center for Medical Progress released its videos of Planned Parenthood officials allegedly haggling over payments for body parts of aborted babies, three states have withdrawn funding for the organization.

"We are concerned about the perception that there are no other health care facilities to address the needs of Planned Parenthood patients should it choose to shut its doors," said Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America. "We support the transfer of funds to facilities that do not perform abortions, so now we must facilitate the transfer of patients."

DFLA is urging state and local governments to provide a list of alternative facilities that take Medicaid patients or offer free or reduced-price health care. In Louisiana, there are two Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, one in New Orleans and the other in Baton Rouge, yet there are more than twenty Community Health Centers in New Orleans and almost ten in Baton Rouge that offer full-service health care for families. Alabama’s Planned Parenthood clinics are similarly located in urban areas, Birmingham and Mobile, where numerous community clinics would be able to supply full-service health care. In New Hampshire, there are five Planned Parenthood clinics that would be affected.

"As supporters of the Affordable Care Act, we would like to see more Americans have access to health care, not fewer. That is why we should be vigilant in ensuring that families have access to information about available alternatives," said Day. "We call on any governor who defunds Planned Parenthood to also support the health care needs of women and families."

Nationwide, there are more than 9,000 Community Health Centers and fewer than 700 Planned Parenthood clinics. The Community Health Centers serve more than 21 million people per year and provide a full array of health care services. Also, they received $11 billion under the ACA to prepare for an expected increase in the number of patients, so they should be able to handle the load.

"While we applaud efforts to deny governmental funding of Planned Parenthood for its role in providing abortions,” said Day, "we urge any state that is considering defunding Planned Parenthood to re-channel those funds to desperately needed health care for at-risk women and infants. Cutting funds would harm families, but re-channeling funds, coupled with informational outreach on alternatives, may result in more families served."
